Another largely tedious pre-season affair – this time at Nuneaton Town – ended goalless to ensure Notts County’s pre-season schedule has a recorded a win, a defeat, and a draw.
A more settled, more senior County side lined up for the majority of this game but were frustrated by their non-league hosts. Zeli Ismail made his first Notts start on the eve of him tying up a five month loan but in truth did little to impress in a first half in which he should have done better given his time spent on the ball.
He was replaced at half time by one of the stars of pre-season so far for Notts – Jeremy Balmy. His invention down the left posed problems for Nuneaton but still County couldn’t make the breakthrough. Trialist Elliot Whitehouse came closest to breaking the deadlock, but he headed straight at the goalkeeper from eight yards.
A draw wasn’t the worst result, but it will do little to encourage doubters of the club’s pre-season so far.
The Magpies visit Hucknall Rolls Royce tomorrow evening before a real test in Derby County on Saturday for the first game at Meadow Lane since Callum McGregor rolled the ball into an empty Swindon net. McGregor himself tonight was scoring the winning goal for Celtic in the Champions League. What Shaun Derry and Greg Abbott might give for his goals right now.
